Questions
Choosing the right dental home for your child
Whether it is your child’s first dental visit, a fresh start, or specialized care for a particular concern, we are here to help you feel confident about the next step.
Is a pediatric dentist actually worth it, or can our family dentist see the kids?
Plenty of general dentists see children perfectly well, and if your child is relaxed, has no treatment needs and your family dentist is good with them, there is no reason to move. The difference shows up when something is harder than routine: a very young child needing extensive work, real dental anxiety, a special healthcare need, or treatment that cannot be done awake. A pediatric specialist has two to three years of training aimed at exactly those situations, and in our case the sedation, anesthesia and surgical facilities to act on it without sending you elsewhere.
What is in the extra training?
Child development and behaviour guidance, growth of the jaws and face, dental care for patients with medical complexity and special healthcare needs, sedation and anesthesia for children, and management of dental trauma in growing teeth. It is a recognised dental specialty with a residency, not a weekend certificate.
Why does having your own surgical centre matter to me?
Because it removes the two worst parts of a general anesthetic case: the wait and the strangers. Hospital operating room time for dental treatment is scarce and can mean months. Our centre is our own facility on our own schedule, the dentist doing the treatment is the one who assessed your child, and the anesthetic is given by a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist.
Are you more expensive than a general dentist?
What a visit costs depends on what is being done, not on the letters after a dentist’s name, and you get a written treatment plan with the costs on it before anything is booked. We go through your insurance coverage with you first, so the cost you see in writing is the cost you are working from. If cost is the thing standing between your child and treatment, tell us, because there are usually options worth discussing.
My child already has a dentist. Can we still visit your clinic?
Yes. We welcome children through two pathways: families looking to establish ongoing dental care through our Preventive Dental Care Program, and children referred by their general dentist for specific concerns requiring specialized pediatric dental care. If your child is referred for a particular treatment or concern, we work closely with your family dentist to provide the specialized care needed. Once treatment is complete, your child can return to their regular dentist for ongoing care.
What if my child is anxious, scared, or has had a bad dental experience?
That’s exactly why we’re here. Our pediatric specialists are trained to help children feel comfortable, including those with dental anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or previous negative experiences. We take the time to build trust and offer different approaches to care, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and general anesthesia when appropriate.
