Prevention

  • Tooth decay (cavities) is the most common chronic disease affecting children in North America. The early dental visit before age one establishes a “Dental Home.” This provides a foundation for a lifetime of preventative education and oral health care. Preventative care is key to your child’s healthy smile. Consistent check-ups will allow our team to diagnose tooth decay, infection, oral cancer, and gum disease before they spread and become a problem. Our strategy is built through educating your child on oral health care.

  • What is a Dental Home?

Establishing a “Dental Home” for your child is important for excellent oral health. Dental care should be comprehensive, continuously accessible, coordinated, compassionate, and culturally effective for children. The early dental visit to establish a dental home provides a foundation upon which a lifetime of preventative education and oral health care can be built.
  • When is it the best time to establish a Dental Home?

The first dental check-up is recommended when your child grows their first tooth or by their first birthday. The first check-up gives both the Pediatric Dentist and the parent an opportunity to work together and review their child’s oral health. Early detect and management of oral conditions will improve your child’s oral and overall health and well-being.
  • What happens during my child’s first dental check-up?

Our pediatric dental team will gently welcome your child with a happy visit to our facility. We will demonstrate age appropriate preventative strategies early to promote healthy oral habits and nutritional counselling for optimal oral and overall health care. Our pediatric dentist will ensure your child’s dental growth and development is appropriate for their age and provide a comprehensive dental examination to ensure teeth are cavity free! At the end of the appointment, we will provide an overall review of our preventative plan and follow-up care for your child to ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles!
  • What happens after my child’s first dental check-up?

We continue to monitor your child’s oral health and dental growth and development by having them follow-up with us on a routine schedule. We ensure your children are following our preventative strategies to grow up healthy and have an amazing beautiful smile into adulthood.

  • How often should I bring my child to the dentist?

A check-up every six month is generally recommended to catch common dental problems. If your child is at high risk for dental caries, we recommend seeing your child every three months.

Why is it important for a Pediatric Dentist or Orthodontist to supervise my child’s dental growth and development?

We recognize the importance of managing the developing dentition and occlusion and its effects on the well-being of infants, children and adolescents. The management includes the recognition, diagnosis and appropriate treatment of dentofacial abnormalities. The guidance of eruption and development of the dentition is an integral component of comprehensive oral health care for all pediatric dental patients.

    What are “Sealants”?

A sealant is a “coating” made of white acrylic resin material that is applied to the deep grooves of the chewing surfaces of teeth. The sealant acts to prevent food and plaque from sticking to these grooves. This procedure is simple and does not require any freezing and is clinically proven to reduce chances of pit and fissure cavities.
