When a child needs general anesthesia, it is given by a pediatric anesthesiologist. Not a dentist, and not a nurse. These are the physicians who do it at our surgical centre.

What a pediatric anesthesiologist is
A physician who went to medical school, completed a residency in anesthesiology, and then did a further fellowship specifically in anesthesia for children. The fellowship is the part that matters here: a small body responds differently to anesthetic than an adult one, and the margin for getting the dose and the airway right is narrower.
These physicians practise at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and provide anesthesia at the Children’s Dental Surgical Centre. The pediatric anesthesiologists who work at our surgical centre rotate through it, and they are staffed at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Dr. Michael Letal is our Medical Director. Anesthesia is their specialty, not ours: we are a dental practice, and this is the arrangement that lets your child have treatment under general anesthesia at our own facility rather than waiting for hospital theatre time.

Recognised at the Alberta Children’s Hospital for meticulous attention to detail and commitment to patient safety. Oversees care from preoperative assessment through to recovery, and is active in research, teaching and mentoring.
